The image of a personal trainer yelling and pushing his clients until near collapse may scare some people away from hiring a trainer, but the benefits of using a personal trainer should be considered carefully. While some in the field provide "tough love" motivation, personal trainers typically work with clients in a non-threatening way, helping them to achieve specific fitness goals. Understanding the potential benefits of a personal trainer can help you decide if the financial investment is worthwhile.

A personal trainer helps you define your fitness goals. A trainer takes into account your current fitness level and discusses what you want to achieve through your workouts. While you may have some idea of the goals you want to set, a professional is able to help you break them down into smaller goals that are specific and realistic. The personal trainer also helps assess your progress toward those goals.

My Story: Army Veteran who retired after 21 years of service, the last 13 with the US Army Special Forces Command. Deploying 6 times to both Afghanistan and Iraq. After having ankle surgery in 2006 I realized that my running days might be behind me. I decided to augment running with weight training. I started training with a couple of the guys in the unit who have been weigh training for years. Immediately I fell in love with that kind of training and I never went back to running long distances for my primary fitness training. In 2009 one of my Soldiers who had competed in bodybuilding showed me that there was more to weight training than, well weight training. I learned a lot from him and that's when I decided I wanted to compete in bodybuilding. I took three years to help build the foundation and upon returning from my last deployment I was going to do my first show. But as luck will have it I had a bicep injury which sidelined me for another season. In 2014 I entered my first NPC show and did really well. Coming in 1st Armed Forces Class, 2nd Novice Middle Weight and 5th Mr. Gulf Coast. That 5th place was my very first time on stage and it was against all the bodybuilders in the show to include the open classes. So coming in 5th speaks is pretty respectable. I have competed in 7 more shows since, the last one qualifying me for a national show after taking 1st Middle Weight in the Riptide Classic in Panama City, FL. I have also coached and prepared athletes in the area, mostly service members for competitions. Looking forward to helping others achieve their fitness goals has become a passion and even more if they're aspiring bodybuilding competitors.
